Brock also has some words about a second common misconception about tutoring: Tutors aren’t students so they don’t understand what we’re going through. See what he has to say on this topic by reading below:

We Are Students Too

by Brock

This month at The Hub we are looking at some misconceptions about The Learning Hub and its services.  One of these misconceptions is that Learning Hub tutors are not students and have therefore never experienced what students go through.

As students, all we really want is to be understood.  While college is an awesome time in life full of fun amazingness, it can also be a time of stress and challenges.  The amount of work expected from us can simply be overwhelming.  The last thing we want to do is go sit in a tutoring session with someone who doesn’t understand what we are going through and be lectured about the oxford comma and weird math curves (Disclaimer: The Learning Hub staff do not and will not lecture students on anything, including the Oxford comma or curves.  We enjoy the Oxford comma as much as any other tutoring center, but lecturing is not our type.)

The point is, a lot of us tutors up at The Hub are students or were not too long ago. In fact, the only tutors up at The Hub are our two Writing Specialists, our Writing Coordinator, our Math Coordinator.  We understand what you are going through.  If you’re experiencing it, we have likely been there or are currently there with you.

We’ve stayed up all night writing papers, fueled by coffee.

We’ve lived on diets of ramen, pizza, and caffeine.

We’ve stayed up all night to watch through every episode of The Office for the fifth time instead of being productive, only to put on our best face for class the next morning.

And, on a more serious note, we’ve worked hard to balance academics with a personal life.  We’ve struggled through tough concepts and writer’s block.  We’ve worked through stress to accomplish assignments that we thought were impossible.  Whatever you are working through, we have likely been there at one point or another.

Having other students as your tutor is to your benefit!  Not only are most of us students, but we come from diverse backgrounds and majors.  We have worked on many assignments similar to what you are working on and can help guide you through the process using our own experience and knowledge.  Some may think that because we are students we will be judgmental if you are having trouble with an assignment.  The complete opposite is the truth!  Because we have worked through the same things, we want to help you get through the same thing and see you succeed!

On top of the subjects we tutor (math, science, writing, economics, and accounting), we also offer tutoring in academic skills.  These are tutoring sessions that can help you make your life as a student a little less stressful.  With our academic skills tutor, you can work on skills like time management, note taking, and studying strategies, among others.

So if you ever feel like this:

make an appointment at The Learning Hub.  Sometimes talking to someone who has been in your position is just what you need.

New Hub Writing Staff Fall 2017

Check out our new tutors this semester!!

NickDSC_1658

Hello, my name is Nick Dabbs.  I am a senior, an English major, and I am also a Writing Peer Tutor here at UIS.  Writing, to me, is a self-expressive process; it is an artistic form that allows an individual to express elements of their personality, style, thought process, and beliefs into a written piece of work.  My hope is to help other individuals see their own potential as writers, and it is my goal to foster a positive, supportive, and collaborative environment so that individuals feel both confident in sharing their work and feel a sense of accomplishment with what they have written.

Aside from writing, I enjoy music (both listening to it and playing it), I love horror movies, riding my bike, and reading (especially Bret Easton Ellis’s work).  I look forward to working with students from all walks of life.

Hi, my name is Sidney DeLeonardo. I am starting my first year as a graduate student in English at UIS. I love literature. One of my favorite novels is Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth. I enjoy writing both academically and creatively. Though writing is stressful, it can also be a fulfilling and enjoyable activity. I look forward to helping all of you become the best writers you can be. In my spare time I enjoy doing yoga, making art, cooking delicious meals, and playing with my dog.
